Data Mesh and Data Fabric for the Consumer Goods Industry

Data Mesh and Data Fabric are innovative approaches to data management that are also of interest to the consumer goods industry. Data Mesh organizes data in decentralized “meshes” and promotes the distribution of data responsibility. Data Fabric creates an abstract data layer over various data sources and enables centralized access. Both concepts facilitate the handling of large amounts of data and improve data availability and usability. The choice between them depends on an organization’s specific requirements and IT architecture.

To better frame the issues, we attended “The Heart of Data Mesh and Fabric” event in Würzburg, at the end of September. This two-day conference provided insights into the concepts of Data Mesh, Data Fabric and Data Intelligence. On the first day, we received an informative introduction to Data Mesh and Data Fabric. The presentations covered organizational, methodological and technological aspects of these data strategies and showed successful practical applications. A highlight was the discussion on the selection of software solutions with concrete recommendations for decision making. Data Mesh and Data Fabric concepts can also be implemented with SAP. On the second day, Zhamak Dehghani, the creator of Data Mesh, presented the current state and her future vision for the concept. The conference also provided an opportunity for networking and sharing experiences.

Data Mesh and Data Fabric are innovative approaches to data management that can offer a wide range of applications in the German consumer goods industry:

  1. Better data management: Data Mesh can help improve the way big data is handled in the industry. By decentralizing data and assigning data responsibilities to different teams or departments, companies can access, analyze and act on data more efficiently and agilely.
  2. Customer experience and personalization: In the consumer goods industry, personalization of products and services is crucial. Data Mesh and Data Fabric make it possible to integrate customer data from different sources and respond to customer preferences in real time. This can lead to tailored offers and an improved customer experience.
  3. Supply chain optimization: The consumer goods industry is highly interconnected internationally. Data Fabric can help link data from different parts of the supply chain and enable better visibility and management of inventory, logistics and deliveries.
  4. Product development and innovation: The consumer goods industry is highly interconnected internationally. Data Fabric can help link data from different parts of the supply chain and enable better visibility and management of inventory, logistics, and deliveries.
  5. Sustainability and Compliance: Data Mesh and Data Fabric facilitate the tracking of sustainability and compliance data. In the consumer goods industry, especially food, product traceability is essential to ensure that quality standards and regulatory requirements are met.

Overall, data mesh and data fabric in the consumer goods industry offer the opportunity to drive data-driven decision-making, increase customer satisfaction, improve operational efficiency, and drive innovation. However, it is important to note that successful implementation of these approaches requires careful planning, resource allocation and training to achieve the best results.
